Check out our latest project video.  We made a picture frame out of a slice of a tree!  Pretty cool, eh?

Apples, apples, and more apples! Every year right around the beginning of fall, we begin harvesting our annual apple crop. We only have two mature trees, but every year, we have more than enough apples than we know what to do with! It becomes a necessity to pass out the apples to family and friends.  Even doing this still leaves us with plenty of produce for applesauce, cider, and pie filling to stock our freezer full.

You will notice in some of the photos below, there is a black fungus on the outside...

AMANA — A move to a century-old farmhouse inspired a new business for Ethan and Melissa Morford.

That business, Hazel Oak Farms, brings the couple’s farmhouse style to the masses in the form of handcrafted furniture and decor, do-it-yourself tutorials, and a blog loaded with old family recipes and vintage ideas.

“We’re both creative types with a lot of different interests,” Ethan said. “We’d like to build a brand and develop a line that matches ou...

This recipe is an all-time favorite in our household! My mother used to make crepes for my brothers and I frequently when we were growing up. She would fill them with various types of pie filling and sprinkle powdered sugar on top. Delicious!!

This recipe is a variation of what we had growing up, but with a little less sugar and a little more calcium and protein. I stumbled upon it a few years ago and gave it a try. My husband has deemed it as one of his favorite breakfast meals ever since!

We can't think of a better way to kick off our first recipe blog than with a family favorite! I have lost count how many times my mom made these monster cookies when I was younger. And who could go wrong with this staple cookie recipe?!

I usually make a batch of these at least once a month, whether it be for the next family get-together, or just to have on hand as a quick snack. Sometimes, I even use it as my substitute for breakfast when I don't have enough time in the morning. I mean, it's got oat...

Come one, come all! We have (almost) finished our guest bedroom!!

We will be the first to admit that selecting paint colors for our old farmhouse has been a bit of a challenge for us. All of the woodwork in the home has a natural wood appearance, and we want to maintain the integrity of the original build. When we see beautiful photos of farmhouse-style homes that have white painted trim, it can be tempting to jump on the bandwagon. However, we have made the decision to leave it as it is! It has s...

Finally getting some use out of this old desk again!

This desk was a coordinating piece to the 10-drawer dresser that we had previously refinished, so we thought we would go ahead and make it a complete, matching set. The dresser had been significantly damaged on one of the top drawers, so we modified the look by taking off the entire top section. This gave it more of an updated look and allowed us to add some accessories to the top of the desk to really change the appearance.

As seen in the photos b...

It is crazy to think that it is 2016 already.  What a year it has been; from moving into our farmhouse, to getting new jobs, and then starting our new endeavor – Hazel Oak Farms.  It has been crazy, but that is the way we like it… BUSY!  Christmas time this year was super busy too, as we attended 5 family Christmas celebrations all across Iowa totaling close to 600 miles of driving!

Although we don’t like to put an emphasis on gift-giving this time of year, we do still like to treat each ot...

Take a look at our latest project: a refinished and distressed vintage dresser! This particular dresser had been in our home growing up, but it needed a fresh look to coordinate with the style in our home.

The dresser got passed down to us from my grandpa a number of years ago.  Not only was the dresser “well used” and needed a few drawers repaired, but a few of the drawers had some scribbled swear words on the inside!  I made sure not to paint over those, though :)

I was really loo...

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

We hope that you may all share in the blessings of peace, hope, and love this holiday season. May your day be filled with the warmth of family and friends as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

We also want to say how grateful we are for all the love and kindness we have seen this year! As we begin our adventure at Hazel Oak Farms, we are constantly reminded of the generous support we have received from our customers and readers. We are looking forward...
